To prepare for the GRE is similar in many respects to preparing for a flight. For starters, there can be quite a bit of anxiety about crashing. But let’s look at three analogies to think about score boosting techniques.
1. Pre-flight check
Like any good pilot, you should make sure that your ‘vehicle’ is in order on test day- that means your mind. Get a good nightís sleep before test day, and most importantly, make sure that you don’t try to cram a month’s worth of vocabulary and techniques in your head on the day before. That’s a one way ticket to test fatigue and a low score.
2. Chart a smooth even course
To minimize in-flight turbulence, make your best effort to maintain a steady pace throughout. Skip questions at the start if theyíre taking you too long- this is so that you won’t be rushed at the end of the section. Learn to recognize which questions are the best return on time investment.
3. Don’t get hijacked
Finally, be aware for the potential for different mental distractors to throw you off. If you’re the type of person who can’t move on mentally from a question you had to guess or think you answered wrongly, remember this for your practice. Learn to take a deep breath, let go, and move onto the next question.
Follow these tips and you should be soaring towards your dream school in no time.
